Students at Bishop Vesey’s have fantastic opportunities to develop their cricketing skills against the strongest cricketing schools in the Midlands as well as opportunities for all to play in house matches.

The first XI plays a mixture of 40 over, declaration and T20 cricket. Outstanding coaching provides boys with the opportunity to train during the winter in the sports hall and in the summer, both during games lessons and after school. With three cricket pitches, indoor and outdoor net facilities and excellent equipment, players and staff are able to enjoy cricket no matter the weather, or condition of the pitches.

Bishop Vesey’s School operates as a development centre for Warwickshire County Cricket Club hosting Warwickshire and District matches in the summer.

The school’s Senior Cross Country team competes in the Greater Birmingham Schools’ Cross Country League. We have enjoyed success in recent years both individually and as a team.

Anyone is welcome to run, whatever their ability, and cross country can also be a great way to improve fitness for other sports. It is always a privilege to see the progress our runners make over their years in the team.

Our home races take place in Sutton Park, with away fixtures at locations such as Cannon Hill Park, Crackley Woods in Kenilworth and the War Memorial Park in Coventry. We are the only school (with the exception of the hosts, King Henry VIII Coventry) to have competed every year since 1972 in the prestigious King Henry VIII Relay Race. With names such as Sebastian Coe and the Brownlee brothers having competed in this event in the past, it is regarded as one of the best inter-schools Cross Country races in the country.

Rugby is very well established at Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School  and enjoyed by many students.  All pupils, regardless of their experience are welcomed into the greatest game in their early years and encouraged to participate as much as possible in games lessons, extra-curricular activities and school matches at weekends against many of the leading schools in the Midlands and beyond.  We compete in local, regional and national competitions, progressing as far as national semi-finals in recent years. Our latest initiative has made rugby available to Sixth Form Girls, with the establishment of a Girls’ Rugby Team.

The school has a rich tradition in rugby; we have developed many domestic, district, county, academy, regional and international players.  Our alumni include professional and international rugby players, and one British and Irish Lion in JRC Young.

Each year a junior rugby tour is available to our year eight and nine boys, with visits to Northern Ireland, Southern Ireland and Scotland, whilst our senior students tour biannually.  Recent destinations have included Singapore & Japan, South America, South Africa and Australia & New Zealand.  Senior Rugby Tours offer the chance of a lifetime to see new sights, meet new people, make new friends, and experience vastly different cultures, and at the same time having the added bonus of playing rugby.

The values of rugby (Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship) sit very well in Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School and the game provides opportunities for everyone.

Here at Vesey we provide an impressive netball offering, and have helped to nurture the talents of two England netball players: Lucy Parize (England U19 and U21) and Madeline Turner (U17). A number of regional and club players also play netball for their school here at Vesey.

The school first won Birmingham County Shield  runners-up trophy in 2012-13,  which was a major achievement for girls’ sport at the school. Especially since our girls played against teams who had been playing as a team for years, whereas we make our team when girls join the school in L6th.

Vesey girls have been Birmingham County Champions from 2013-2018/19. Represented the West Midlands seven times. Regional runners up once and Regional Champions twice, which took us to Nationals 3 times a superb achievement for the school.

However, whilst we do boast an impressive array of titles, we also welcome and encourage girls to try their hand at netball and get involved. Even if they don’t go on the make the first team, girls can enjoy a welcoming and friendly environment in our weekly netball practices.

We have built a good relationship with many schools over the years and have regular Wednesday afternoon fixtures. Training is a lot of fun and the girls support each other in lots of different ways to help them improve on their netball knowledge and skill.

We make the most of the excellent facilities we have here at BVGS: 2 floodlit outdoor courts on the pavilion and our sports hall. Come and join us!

The school’s tennis programme has grown in recent years with each summer seeing lower-school boys take part in competitive fixtures against local schools. In 2017, the U14 team progressed to the Regional Finals day at Loughborough University after an unbeaten season, ably led by captain George Parkes. The school has regularly recorded successful results against schools from around Birmingham, with a mixed fixture list including opposition from the independent, grammar and comprehensive sector.

The boys benefit from an active link with Sutton United tennis club, with head coach Paul Robinson leading multiple sessions here each week during the season. Teams operate at each year group from Year 7 to Year 10 and a specialist team from across the year groups contest the OVA cup each summer against school alumni.

House tennis is also offered and over 50 boys compete in this each summer. The house tournament offers a chance for players to shine and gain selection for the school teams. Fixtures incorporate both singles and doubles matches, taking place after school between Mondays and Thursdays.
