RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Religious Education | Curriculum Intent

Our aim is to develop our students into scholars of Religion, Philosophy & Ethics through a broad, balanced and deep approach to the subject. Our aim is to enable students to become knowledgeable about global religion and non-religion to prepare them to engage effectively as global citizens in a multi-religious and multi-secular world.   Underpinning everything we do in RE at Bishop Vesey’s is the desire to create space for students to consider their own existence and their own place within this diverse world.

The big ideas in Religious Education are the 24 Dispositions and the 4 Dimensions of Learning. At Bishop Vesey’s students are encouraged to become scholars of Religion, Philosophy & Ethics by a broad, balanced and deep approach to the subject. They will develop as Global Citizens through studying the lives of others and reflecting on the meaning of their own lives.

The scheme of work reflects the Birmingham Agreed Syllabus:

  • 24 Dispositions
  • 4 Dimensions of learning
  • Learning from experience
  • Learning about religions and non-religious world views
  • Learning from faith and non-religious world views
  • Learning to discern

Year 7 RE at Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School is intended to start with the basis of RE. Year 8 builds foundations on this basis and Year 9 seeks to develop learning further. To develop in RE pupils/students must have encountered the topics covered above. Overall pupils/students need to know who they are and how they are developing as people in Birmingham and globally. Plus how other people (whether they are religious or not) believe themselves to be whilst being reflective and discerning.

Pupils/students will use the following disciplines to engage with RE:

  • Theology
  • Philosophy
  • Ethics
  • Sociology
  • Anthropology
  • Literary criticism
  • History
  • Science
  • Politics

A world view is in essence the lens through which a person sees the world around them. At a very basic level this might be a religion but this does not reflect lived experience. Pupils/students will be encouraged to reflect on this in both their own lives and the lives of others.
